Validity of J-1 visa

It is important to distinguish between the validity of your J-1 visa and the authorized period of participation in the program. You may work under the program only during the period shown on your DS-2019 form. A new J-1 program participant may not enter the United States more than 30 days before the program start date shown on the DS-2019. The specific arrival date should also be coordinated with the terms of the Job Offer, the employer, and the sponsor's instructions. After the program end date shown on the DS-2019, a Grace Period of up to 30 days begins. During this period you may travel in the United States and prepare to return home, but you may not work.
