Cape Town is considered a fairly safe place. Many white, colored, and, of course, black people live here—it is Africa, after all!
Black people are very friendly; for example, they constantly greet you and ask how you are doing. Today, I was riding in a minibus (a shared taxi), and there was some great music playing. I started dancing a little, and in the end, the whole minibus was dancing along with me!
However, as our guide said, black people are an incredibly kind nation, but still, don't trust them!
Based on this, we looked for an apartment in what are considered the safest areas: Sea Point, Green Point, and the Waterfront. We also considered the center, but for some reason, it seems less calm there, and it's quite far from the ocean—and the ocean here... I have no words!
Although today, I finally got brave enough to venture into the city alone! The only incident was a beggar who followed me for about 10 minutes, asking me to buy him something to eat... I stubbornly stayed silent until he started touching me, and then a dialogue ensued, with me raising my voice:
- Don't touch me!
- Please, buy something to eat for me...
- NO!
Apparently, I scared him quite a bit because he ran away immediately =)
Also, I've gotten confused about which way to look when crossing the street, so I look both ways!
There are also very interesting traffic lights here—I mean, really interesting. You can stand for half an hour waiting for the green light, so nobody bothers waiting for them. I think in Russia, everyone would have been run over by now, but here, no, everyone yields to you! But if you do decide to use the traffic light, don't worry that it will turn red a couple of seconds after turning green; the red light blinks first, giving you the chance to cross the road safely!
Regarding transport, I can say that white people mostly drive cars and taxis, but sometimes you can see two or three in a minibus. Minibuses usually have someone like a conductor who is always hanging out the window, shouting where the minibus is going! It's very funny! I haven't used the city buses yet, but they say only black people ride them.
Today I went to Camps Bay beach and even dipped into the water, despite it being ice-cold. And of course, my face got sunburned again, so I'm writing this post covered in Panthenol. It's good I brought two cans, as one is already running out. I wish my skin would get used to the sun soon. We also tried to play volleyball, but that was probably a bad idea, as now my arms are all bruised, and I was planning to start looking for a job tomorrow. I'll have to wear something with long sleeves, otherwise, they'll think I'm a drug addict!
Today we signed the house contract. I advise you to arrange with a local beforehand to read the contract, just in case! We are moving in on Friday. I can't wait, as I still don't really know what I brought with me!
And tomorrow I think I'll start looking for a job!
Well, see you =)
