One of the mysteries of modern toponymy is why the state of Maine is called "Men" in Russian maps. Even by the spelling, one can judge that it is pronounced as "Maine". But there is another version of the origin of this name from the word "mainland", meaning the main land in relation to the numerous islands along the coastline.
And in our language, it turns out to sound like the word "man".
There are indeed many islands here. In the towns along the entire ocean coast, you don't often find open beaches facing the endless expanses of water. The entire view is blocked by islands. By the way, in front of our town, there are exactly 365 of them - which is why they are called the islands of one year. That is also interesting.
By the way, I remembered that Ilf and Petrov noted the same problem in Texas: "First of all, Texas is not called Texas, but Teksas. But that's only half the trouble" ("One-storied America").
In connection with the above, I propose to change all Russian-language maps:) And for now, I will lay the foundation for a glorious tradition and start restoring justice, henceforth calling the state "Maine".
