I only stayed in San Diego for two days and then hopped on a bus in the evening to arrive in Las Vegas by morning. It turns out there are no direct buses, so I had to transfer in Los Angeles. At the LA station, there were so many people wanting to get to Las Vegas that I ended up standing right in front of the boarding gate, only to be told there were no seats left on the bus. I was so confused—my plan was to be in Las Vegas by 6 AM, and now I had no idea when or how I'd get there, and there wasn't another bus on the schedule. I tried to ask the driver what I should do, but she was a woman who just snapped and started yelling at me not to tell her how to do her job.
But in the end, it all worked out, and they found a couple of extra seats so I could get on the bus.
Once I reached Las Vegas, they warned me at the station to be careful since I was alone, just in case someone bothered me. I made it to the city bus stop and waited about half an hour. Las Vegas has a well-developed bus system, but the one huge downside is that buses only run every 20 minutes.
When I got to my accommodation, they told me they were fully booked and asked me to wait until at least 10 AM to check in (the guy at the front desk was really nice). Honestly, I wasn't in the mood to go anywhere, so I sat on a bench outside, and a guy who was also staying there decided to strike up a conversation. We started talking, and since he acted like he knew the place well, I asked him to help me buy a ticket to the Canyon. He didn't really know, but he managed to ask some passersby, and we found the place where they sold tickets. I immediately bought a ticket for a bus tour for the next day ($100). They told me they'd pick me up in the morning.
After that, I went back to the hostel. It turned out to be very cheap, so I booked a single room—there weren't really any other options anyway. I checked in and found a double bed, which would have been even cheaper if I were traveling with someone, and there was a TV, but even though I hadn't watched TV all summer, I wasn't really interested. I freshened up and slept all day because I was exhausted. My goal was the Canyon, not Las Vegas; you need to go there with a group and be 21 to really enjoy it.
The next day I went to the Canyon. It was half a day of travel, plus figuring out who was going to which part to see. Then we watched a movie, spent an hour at one spot, an hour at another, and then the drive back. The following day and evening, I finally saw Las Vegas. I walked around and admired the fountains.
And then, the flight back to D.C.
