So... I'm planning to go in the summer of 2011. Before this, I was a bit skeptical about the Work and Travel USA program. After all, I'm a girl used to having food brought to me in restaurants, having a maid clean my room, and generally being served everywhere. But doing the same things myself... it just didn't feel right ))) But everything changes, kids grow up and realize they don't want to sit around their whole lives watching someone else do things, make mistakes, fix them, rejoice, and travel... And visiting America is a dream, maybe not for everyone, but for a great many. I wanted to see everything I saw in the movies... Not just the skyscrapers, billboards, noise, chaos, and crowds of people... But also the cute houses without fences, the road where only one or two cars pass by an hour, the boy with newspapers on a bicycle, I want to see a school... with lockers, a cafeteria... and in general! I grew up on movies about American youth (and Commando and Terminator... though I'm unlikely to see him) and my ego just demands to see, touch, and smell everything I saw in the movies.
So I decided to tackle America with all my might. Since I decided this in April... and it was way too late to apply, nothing stopped me from scouring the forum from cover to cover, reading all the known articles on the topic of America, students in America, people in America, laws in America... well, you get it)) By June-July, I had read so much that it felt like I had been to the States at least twice. I pestered everyone by talking only about adventures in the States, about who got into what kind of trouble and how they got out of it.... I couldn't wait for the cherished month of September to arrive so I could submit my documents... I would have run there on September 1st... but the agency said recruitment starts in October... sigh, and there's nothing left to read anymore)))
In short, step 1 is to decide that you really need THIS... not just need, but REALLY... REALLY need it. After all, this pleasure costs at least one and a half thousand North American dollars, which you have to ask your parents for... tell them HOW important it is to you, and WHY you want to leave for an unfamiliar country for 3-4 months. For many parents, this is real money that they save up... and then you also need to give the child some money for the first few weeks... so you definitely need to shell out 2.5 thousand.
