So, we went to America with specific schemes to make money. Back then, there were four of us. Me, my brother, and two girls. We were supposed to live together and, naturally, make money together too. And here are the schemes:
-
Walking around the beach in interesting costumes and taking photos with people for money. Someone we knew said their friends had made money that way. We thought the idea was interesting and decided to try it. Since the girls went to America earlier, they were supposed to test if this scheme actually worked. We decided to sew pirate costumes, as pirates were the symbol of the Outer Banks. They went to the beach in these costumes exactly once, and seeing that people weren't exactly rushing to give them money, they decided not to go back. That was it. The first scheme died out before it even started. When we arrived, the girls told us we wouldn't make money that way. Okay, fair enough. Even then, I didn't know how things would turn out later.
-
Sitting outside Walmart with a guitar, playing Russian songs, and collecting money for it. My brother and I sat outside Walmart for exactly two days (the girls refused; for some reason, they were embarrassed). Then the store manager kicked us out, saying we could play the guitar, but making money from it was a NO. So what was the point of sitting there? True, on the first day, we earned our first 6 bucks that year. So, the idea of making money with guitars also turned out to be not very successful.

Selling Ukrainian souvenirs on eBay. Before leaving, I found a bunch of souvenirs at home from who knows where and decided to take them to the USA and sell them at auction. I wanted to earn a few hundred dollars. It turned out it wasn't that simple. Over the whole summer, I sold only one wooden egg for 5 bucks and that’s it. When this idea didn't take off either, we gave some of the souvenirs to acquaintances and left the rest in the States to wait for better times.

X. Actually, there was one more idea. An idea that I and all of us hoped for more than the others, but unfortunately, I cannot talk about it here because it is still in the process of being implemented in the coming year, 2011. This idea is truly unique for the USA, and nothing like it exists there yet. We actually earned our first money from this idea, and then we had to register everything legally, but we simply didn't have enough time for lawyers, insurance, etc. But everything is still ahead.
As I said before, all the money the four of us were going to earn in the States was supposed to be made from these ideas. According to our plan, we weren't supposed to work anywhere else. But we still had to look for jobs. Read on.
