I wake up in the morning to a knock at the door. I realize it's not even 8 o'clock, which means my friend has come to pick me up and take me to meet my employers. Putting on the warmest clothes I had, I step out onto the snowy streets of the city, and my friend takes me for coffee, just like in all those American TV shows. It still hasn't sunk in that I'm in America, that this is it – the dream.
On the way, I see deer. My God, DEER. Over 3 months, I've encountered deer, bears, raccoons, and God knows who else. This wildlife really tested my nerves all summer. And people say things about Russia!
Mountains all around me, the sun playing on the snow, the frosty air that invigorates you. My head is spinning, and you still don't understand what's happening. But the first thing that was clear right away – the people here are completely different: they are open, friendly, always smiling, and ready to help.
On the very first day, I meet my employers. At the restaurant where I will be working as a hostess, I am met by the manager, Jay. And the immediate thought: "Typical American." I don't know why, but that's my criterion based solely on appearance. It's hard to even explain. A cheerful man, he quickly explains how things work, lets me go, and we'll meet again in a few days.
And now, the origin of my blog's name is revealed. The name is very ambiguous, I understood that perfectly well. But I'll start with its literal meaning.
My second job was as a PASTRY CHEF. I baked those famous American apple pies and more, of course! Everyone has seen "Back to the Future," right? Well, our “You need pie” reminded me of that movie and the cafe from it from the very first second. Old-school music, license plates from different states hung all over the cafe, pictures in the style of "80s America" or something like that. They give me a tour of the small establishment, show me the places of my future domain, introduce me to the guys, and, naturally, I don't remember a single name.
Now, finally, I can call my family. You show everyone that you have snow and their jaws drop, they are happy for you, wish you success, and say that everything will work out. How I want to believe that.
Workdays have begun. In the morning - pastry chef, in the afternoon – hostess.
