A small, transparent snowflake fluttered from side to side and landed softly on my palm. I sat by the open window, listening to the silent melody of falling snow. It has been a long time since this fair-haired winter guest graced our lands with its presence. If I am not mistaken, the last time I managed to get on skis was around 2017, which is more than ten years ago! Well, an unexpected snowfall is a good reason to get nostalgic about a youth that has gone forever...
I take out my guitar, shake the dust off its waist, and... "How many years have passed, the wires are still humming about the same thing, the planes are still waiting for the same thing..." God, it's like a time machine taking me back to that distant 2008, the starting point of my adult life. How I approached the doors of the International Exchange Center with timid steps, pulled the handle... Back then, I couldn't even imagine where that cherished door would lead me! What I felt at that moment is impossible to put into words! It was a cocktail of the ripest and boldest hopes, seasoned with a powder of anxious anticipation, and garnished with a cherry of curiosity. I can still feel that taste on my lips; it's simply impossible to forget... Those who have been in my shoes will understand! Behind that door, a dream was waiting for me, no – a DREAM, bright and cherished, which was destined to come true... A dream that changed me forever and made me who I am today.
The wail of a siren outside the window brings me back to the future. I walk to the window and inhale the fresh night air. It's hard to believe that so many years have already passed! I am no longer surrounded by faceless gray nine-story buildings, but by fashionable skyscrapers reaching for the sky, sparkling with their mirrored surfaces in the night lights. Much has changed since then. Laptops have become even thinner, phones even smaller, cars even faster, and there are even more nuts in a Snickers bar). Globalization has reached its peak with the introduction of a single world currency, which has significantly made life easier for travelers and counterfeiters. Robots have replaced 80% of human manual labor, leaving people more space for self-realization. Space exploration is moving by leaps and bounds - now there is a human footprint not only on the Moon, but also on Mars and Venus.
Perhaps the most important achievement of modern times is the invention of a cure for AIDS by Russian scientists a year ago. So the plague of the 20th century is now over, and the world has breathed a sigh of relief. The wonders of genetic engineering now allow future parents to plan the gender of their child in advance, as well as some of their features, such as eye color, hair, height... I hope these achievements don't go too far, otherwise we will face a generation of stamped-out geniuses with model looks. Through cloning, it has been possible to resurrect many species of extinct animals and plants. Oh, by the way, I almost forgot! We won the Sochi Olympics with dignity, receiving the largest number of medals and proving to the whole world once again that sports in our country are not dead. But, sadly, our national team never became world football champions...
Many new programs have appeared at the International Exchange Center during this time, quite bold and very interesting. The most extreme one is a trip to the wild forests of the Amazon with the goal of connecting with nature and gaining survival skills in the wild. But the most popular program is still Work and Travel, which today covers almost the entire globe. Now you can go to almost any country in the world, depending on your goals and preferences. Also, with the help of the International Exchange Center, you can now host a student from another country who has arrived through the same program.
Yes, it may really seem that a lot has changed. But in reality, it is just a shell, a shiny wrapper of our life, changing colors, shapes, and sizes... But the essence has remained unchanged for many, many years. The wires are indeed still humming about the same thing, and our planes are still waiting for the same thing. Good is still fighting evil, and we continue to believe that it still wins... People are still looking for something, often not knowing what themselves... We still love, hate, suffer, rejoice... Only the scenery changes. And the International Exchange Center still gives people a dream, the memories of which, even after many years, will warm them on cold winter evenings, just like me now. And that is the most important thing. After all, the moments gifted by the International Exchange Center are priceless: friendly laughter, new meetings, tears of parting, trials and victories, the sound of the ocean, the warmth of loved ones' hands, a stranger's smile, a random dance on the beach, the smell of the Motherland... This is what is truly important and significant, not some thousands of dollars and iPods brought home. And millions of people will continue to approach the cherished door to the International Exchange Center with trepidation for a long time to come, to meet their new life behind it, to find themselves on the other side of the Earth, to challenge their fears and doubts. Only it won't be us anymore...
