A student exchange program is an agreement between educational institutions for the mutual exchange of students. For those hearing about this for the first time, it might sound extremely unusual, and perhaps even trigger a bit of fear, but now we will explore why this shouldn't scare you, but rather draw you in.
Student exchange programs are widely spreading in the modern world and are the founders of uniting many countries and religions. Absolutely different people, raised with unique upbringings and worldviews based on contact with the environment and traditions of their native lands, are brought together at one point: education.
Programs of this kind are available to everyone, depending on how much effort they put into it. This is a unique chance to end up in a "different" world and turn your life upside down.
Let's consider a small vignette: a person who has received their lucky ticket. Arriving in another country, everything starts at the airport. They step off the plane and find themselves in extremely unusual conditions, which, by the way, contributes to the development of their internal boundaries. A taxi to the place of residence, and along the way, a multitude of landscapes from the car window, completely extraordinary. Unusual houses, cars, people's clothing – absolutely everything is surprising. In a new country, there is its own concept of aesthetics – studying the cultural plan is no less important. In conversation, people behave quite differently; different topics, different questions. Society carries its own unique rules. A multitude of new acquaintances makes one think again and again – how different everyone is. But then, the time comes for what unites everyone: education.
How much new knowledge can one take away with the help of an exchange study program? Limitless. A year of life in another country allows a person not only to improve their language skills and capabilities but also to reconsider their views on society, aesthetics, traditions, science, and even everyday habits.
I won't forget to mention a no less important side of this type of education: career growth. Developing in another country provides an opportunity to gain individual knowledge. In every corner of our beautiful planet, there are different views even on how to bake bread. With work, it's exactly the same. Every person in their field eventually finds "their" type of work, based on their personal experience, both professional and life-related. The opportunity to meet masters of their craft who have found their calling in a direction similar to yours and exchange experience. This is real gold. Absorbing knowledge, a person blossoms like a tree. Some – like a cherry blossom. They search for their path for a long time, and in one moment, they spread out in tender pink petals. As a result, a person falls in love with their work. In an unusual environment that forces a person out of their comfort zone, one can even reconsider their views on work and understand it in a completely different way.
In my city, there are many people who have chosen this type of education. Watching their path is no less interesting. Helping them learn and grasp our way of life is like explaining to a child why the sky is blue. Their path is difficult, but insanely interesting. An adventure, like from a children's fairy tale! They are accompanied not only by aesthetic moments of development but sometimes by awkward, funny stories. Shall I tell you?
One acquaintance of mine, who came from Canada to my hometown, was exploring the nearby town of "Sviyazhsk" in my company. She visited many attractions, took a couple of beautiful photos, and stopped to grab a bite. I took her to a cafe of authentic "Russian cuisine." She chose it solely based on which name sounded funnier. We settled on okroshka. I couldn't resist the idea of suggesting she take Olivier salad as a second course. You should have seen the expression on her face when they brought her the same thing, with the addition of kvass to one of the bowls. For an hour, we argued heatedly and built almost global theories on how Olivier turned into a separate dish. During her time in Russia, she never ceased to be surprised by our traditions, not to mention the turns of phrase that are understandable only to Russian people. But over time, her speech became indistinguishable from ours, and she even managed to uncover the secret – who exactly are the Russians.
Now it's time to talk about me. My name is Kamila, and in my life, I study traditions not only with the help of foreign literature but also with an absolutely new method. I work in children's camps, focusing on Chinese and English speech and culture. I not only introduce children to the linguistic features of different countries but also communicate directly with native speakers. They tell many stories, unique features of their native lands, and learn about ours themselves. The children, in turn, explore other countries with no less interest, as if they were there. My team and I confidently recreate the picture of another world, immersing children in a fairy tale.
In the process of working with this direction, I have often wondered what it would be like to be in such an atmosphere in reality, as if I were a child myself. After many thoughts, a picture formed in my head, and I confidently decided that such a study program is truly interesting to me and suits me.
Getting to know a society and culture new to me will allow me, first and foremost, to self-develop. Living and growing in a country whose language and culture interest me is the best practice and a guarantee of improving myself and my skills. Getting to know the culture and society will allow me to spend time usefully and interestingly. Expanding my horizons will help me make changes and contribute to the development of internationality in my country. Breaking internal stereotypes, initiative, social growth, and much more. I would combine all this under one golden word – experience. The events and emotions I will experience and leave behind will give me the opportunity to find a new side to my life in the future.
I am full of energy that will help me achieve success. A kind of engine that has pushed me to move forward all my life and not stop before any difficulties.
Participation in the program will help me develop in my field in the future. I am studying in the "Advertising and Public Relations" profile. Activity in the field of mass media carries the burden of responsibility for what you present to society. Communication with a multitude of people, from various circles, from the very youngest to the mature, teaches one how to work with people. It is important not only to choose words correctly but also to realize oneself as a good conversationalist. A student exchange program will help me better understand the features of the social structure of another country and meet amazing people. This knowledge will help me look differently at how that very web that lies between people works.
Working in a language-focused camp implies the importance of learning languages and their features. You know, one child once asked me why dragons are so important in China? The legends I told him made the child listen with sparkles in his eyes. And do you know what he said after? I really want to visit there, the temples where they once lived!
Student exchange programs are actively developing, and it would seem that this is a fully formed system. But I would add something absolutely unique to it. In my opinion, it would be interesting to create a structure not just of simple student exchange, but of creating a university that would consist of groups from every country in the world! Imagine what experience each student would gain by getting to know the whole world in a year? The exchange of experience, information, and the heritage of individuals from each country would allow one to look at the world in a new way.
I conducted a social survey among acquaintances, and their opinions were divided. Some said that this idea would allow the entire planet to develop socially and perhaps unite the whole world. Such development, in their opinion, would not only influence the social growth of people but would also give a push to the development of science in the modern world, under the influence of the collision of absolutely different views. Others were slightly skeptical about this idea, justifying it with the fear of misunderstanding between different circles of society. After all, they grew up with completely different lifestyles; how can they be brought to one place without the fear that they will remain in their own groups? I belong to the first group, and I would gladly participate in such a program myself.
Summing up the above and outlining all the topics of today's narrative under one circle, student exchange programs are a unique opportunity not only for an individual but for the whole world. The world blossoms when views collide, and I would not refuse to contribute to this myself.
This direction of education has room to grow and develop. By combining the knowledge of the whole world, we expand our own capabilities. And perhaps, after 20 or 50 years, this will become commonplace, and in every country, the percentage of the indigenous population will significantly decrease, because the whole world will spin into one cycle, all together creating a unique system – the system of our planet Earth.
