I would like to copy my essay here, titled "How Everything Will Be Fine," which I wrote 2 months before the trip. Now, of course, it seems naive, BUT I believe that my positive attitude and the belief that nothing terrible would happen to me helped me.

Seriously, I cried only 3 times - when the consul told me I was being deported... when I was told I was being fired because I didn't speak English. And when my roommates ate my cookies. I ate what they brought home myself. We always did that, so I don't blame them. It's just that at that moment I desperately needed privacy... I wanted no one to touch what I wanted to try myself... to fall asleep in silence and in the dark... to have sex not in front of 8 people in the room, 6 of whom were not sleeping. and so on)))

So, the essay with my insertions in italics (underlined), written after the trip.

I am a "first-year student" - W&T 2009 - the crisis is not scary! Miata Thu Jan 15, 2009 3:39 am

Have you noticed that the worse the situation you find yourself in, the more fun it is to tell your friends about it later (hahaha, this is now my favorite story... pimps, homeless people, drug dealers, cultists - and all this in the first 3 days in the USA)? What happens to us - the most desperate, spontaneous, even wild - remains in our memory. And such capital will never burn out, will not depreciate, on the contrary - it will grow every year, because the time when we could afford to behave thoughtlessly and recklessly will move further away. And I sincerely believe that this summer, no matter how difficult it was, will remain in my memory as the best adventure, the warmest and most joyful memory.

I talk about the crisis more often than others. My major is financial management and every day they consider it their duty to remind us how high the competition is, how critical and complex the situation is (yes, yes, especially when there is only 1 egg in the fridge that you don't eat). How important it is now to gain experience and knowledge so that later, when the economy comes out of this state, you will be on top. Sometimes I imagine what my life will be like in 15 years... (a couple of times I thought I wouldn't survive). I think about the fact that I will have to talk about this crisis, about high unemployment and the stock market crash more than once... But ironically, mentally I will not turn to the dogmas that I was taught at the university and not even to the statistics that are published in RBC daily on this topic. Mentally, I will be in this Summer. Who, if not us, will know what an economic crisis in the USA is? For me, the main character of all this mess will not be an abstract John Smith who never paid off his mortgage... but me, my friends, random people I will meet... we will all be in America at this time, and it seems to me there is something romantic about it (oh, there was plenty of romance) =).

This topic does not specify which crisis is being discussed... I thought it was about a financial/economic one. What if not?? What if you wanted to know what mood I am waiting for this trip with?? So, it's amazing. I am an optimist. And I love people very much (now I don't love all people)))). It seems to me that nothing bad can happen to me (the delusion of the century, you can't think like that), I won't be deceived or dumped. Yes, it may happen that the situation will not be in my favor, so making adequate decisions and thinking with your head in general is useful... but I am sure that no economic crisis can make me lose faith in my goal: to have an unforgettable summer (YES YES YES). I want so much, I want to travel, I want to communicate, make friends, I even want to fall in love... =) Are work difficulties, even if they arise, going to prevent me from enjoying what surrounds me, absorbing it and then reproducing these pictures in my memory for many years - OF COURSE NOT! (of course, yes... it's true)))

Whatever your desires are, spontaneous like mine, or thought-out, formed into some plan, I wish you not to get hung up on money and not give up, no matter what happens. This summer is just a short interval in our lives, but maybe for someone it will be a reason to figure themselves out, to prove something, to become someone. These words were not said by me, but they express my thoughts: "Whoever thirsts to accomplish great things must take risks and make mistakes, without losing heart because of this and without being afraid to reveal themselves; a person who knows their weaknesses can try to turn them to their advantage."
