What level of English is required?

English is one of the main tools you will need to participate in the Work and Travel USA program. This is not a tourist trip where you can get by with minimal language skills. It is important to be able to communicate with Americans - with coworkers at work, with store clerks, in everyday life, and even at the airport on your first step onto U.S. soil. To make sure you are ready for the program, we conduct a preliminary English interview. A basic level is enough to participate, but that doesn't mean you can relax - you'll need to keep improving your skills to feel confident in different situations. You can take advantage of our free English language course, available to all IEC participants, which will help you improve your speaking skills. During the interview we will discuss simple topics: your studies, hobbies, work experience and expectations of the program. Don't worry, it's an easy conversation where the key is to be natural and not memorize answers. Knowledge of English also plays an important role in the visa interview at the embassy. Consuls want to make sure that you can communicate fluently with employers and colleagues without the help of an interpreter. But the most important thing is to be calm and confident in your answers to convince the consul that you are ready for this unique program.
