Social Security Number (SSN)

What is a Social Security Number (SSN) and why do Work and Travel USA participants need one? A Social Security Number (SSN) is your unique identification number in the United States, analogous to a TIN or personal identification number, which is required for official employment and wages. It is also used for taxation and other legal procedures. This number should be kept safe and not shared with third parties. How do I get an SSN? 1. When you arrive in the U.S., you need to register in SEVIS so that your sponsor can verify your participation in the program. This is the first step before you apply for an SSN. 2. You can get an SSN at any Social Security Administration (SSA) office. Find the nearest office at www.ssa.gov by entering the ZIP code of the city you are in. We recommend that you get your SSN where you will be working. 3. At the SSA office, you need to submit the following documents: * The number of the completed questionnaire at www.ssa.gov (to be completed online only after your activation in SEVIS). * A passport with a J-1 visa. * Form DS-2019. * Form I-94, if required. * Dear Social Security Officer letter from the InterExchange program sponsor. 4. After you submit your application, you will receive an application receipt confirming that you applied for an SSN. Make a copy of this document for yourself and give the original to your employer. This document will allow you to start working even if your SSN has not yet arrived. 5. A card with your Social Security Number will be mailed within 2-6 weeks to the address you provide (such as your home or employer). If you do not get your card on time, contact the SSA office to find out why it is late. 6. Most employers will start paying your wages before you get your SSN. If your employer refuses to do this, contact your InterExchange sponsor, they will explain to your employer the rules for program participants without SSNs in the first stages. Why shouldn't you share your SSN? SSN is a unique number that is tied to your data. Do not share this number with anyone except your employer and other official organizations. Keep the card in a safe place, and do not laminate it, as it will be considered invalid. To summarize: * Find the nearest SSA office and apply for an SSN. * Get the application receipt and give it to your employer. * Keep your SSN safe and don't give it to other people.
