How to Apply for a J-1 Visa

Here are the steps you need to take after you have received a job offer (full service option) or it has been approved (self arranged option): Step 1: Where to attend the visa interview As a general rule, the visa interview should take place at the U.S. embassy or consulate designated for your country of citizenship or residence. If routine operations for the relevant visa category are not available in a participant's country, the place of application is determined under the current U.S. Department of State procedure. Do not choose a third country on your own solely because interview appointments are available there. Before starting the process, always confirm the current procedure with your IEC representative, as it may differ for participants from different countries. Step 2: Filling out the DS-160 Visa Application Form Once your job offer is confirmed, you will be assigned a SEVIS number and can begin completing the DS-160 visa application. You can view your SEVIS number in your profile on the sponsor's website. Step 3: Obtain the DS-2019 form and prepare for the interview The DS-2019 form is issued electronically and can be downloaded from your personal account on the sponsor's website. You can then schedule a visa interview at the U.S. Embassy. Step 4: Appointment for an embassy interview The appointment procedure and the official service used depend on the country of application. In some countries and IEC offices, appointments are arranged through an IEC representative. Therefore, first confirm the procedure with your representative. If participants in your country schedule the appointment themselves, use only the official appointment service specified by the relevant U.S. embassy or consulate. Step 5: Embassy interview On the day of the interview you need to come with a full set of documents and be interviewed by the consul. The interview will take place in English and the consul will announce the decision immediately. If everything is in order, your passport will remain with the consul for visa issuance and you will receive it back with the visa within 3-5 working days (check with the consulate for the exact date). If the visa is refused, your passport will be returned to you immediately after the interview. Related topics: - J-1 Visa - Scheduling Your Visa Interview - Form DS-2019 - Form I-901
