What if I've Never Traveled Abroad?
International travel experience is cool, of course, but absolutely not required for the program. So if you've never traveled abroad before, don't worry! Let's talk about what's really important to participate in the Work & Travel USA program: English Language. You don't need to have an advanced level of English, but a basic knowledge is necessary so that you can communicate both at work and in your daily life in the US. If you feel there are gaps, that's a great reason to improve! Start preparing now. Finances. You'll need to figure out your budget for participating in the program. First, there is the cost of the program itself. Usually the payment is broken down into several parts: the first payment is made at registration and the second payment is made after your job offer is confirmed. Your coordinator will explain the payment process in detail. Second, there are the costs of the visa (consular fees, transportation to the interview site) and travel to the U.S. (round-trip airfare, lodging and meals). You will also need an amount for the first days of your stay in the U.S. up to your first paycheck (approximately 900 USD). Job Choice. Most program participants work in the service industry: in stores, amusement parks, restaurants, cafes or hotels. The job you choose depends on your preferences, skills, and level of English. Many participants choose to work on the East Coast of the United States. J-1 visa. This is a special visa for cultural exchange. To get it, you will have an interview at the U.S. Embassy. The main thing is to prepare all the necessary documents and be ready to explain the purpose of the trip. This is not an exam on U.S. history or culture, it is important to show your interest in cultural exchange and confidence in participating in the program. Openness and flexibility. Be ready for new experiences and unpredictable situations. This is part of an adventure that will stay with you for a lifetime. And most importantly, remember: even if you're not an experienced traveler yet, everyone started with the first step once. You will succeed!
